Different important things have reached the ears of different civfanatics.
One of them:
The free civilization version FreeCiv is now finally available as browser game! The developers have implemented a HTML5 version of FreeCiv, which should be playable in all modern browsers, and no additional plugins are required (which means it does not only run on desktop computers, but also on e.g. various iDevices without Flash).
This has also been covered by PCGamer.
Otherwise, the father of Civilization, Sid Meier, has given 2 interviews about different topics. In this article on Eurogamer ("Sid Meier's cultural victory") he talks about the design philosophy, the development of games over time, and the fascination of games.
Quote:
|
"That's part of the reason why turn-based games work in so many cases, I guess: you feel like you have the freedom to take whatever time you want to think about consequences and possibilities. Your mind is doing all this cool stuff, and that's what we're trying to get to happen. We still remember that it's important to get the player's total brain engaged and not just the tips of their fingers."
|
Discuss this further in the related forum thread (thanks to Oridan).
In the other article on GamesIndustry.biz ("We must not forget the value of the core gamer") he talks about mobile games, casual and core gamers, concept of "free to play" and Kickstarter.
Quote:
|
"I think it reinforces for us the value of our core gaming audience and how important it is for us keep in contact with them and reach out to them, and in this case to kind of follow them to where they are going now, from PC to playing some mobile games; wherever else they're playing games, we want to be there and meet them on those platforms."

(thanks to Thorburne for that hint)

On record. The one-hundred-and-seventy-second episode of PolyCast, "Accept That Amendment", features regular co-hosts Daniel "DanQ" Quick, "Makahlua", Philip "TheMeInTeam" Bellew and "MadDjinn" with returning guest co-host Stewart "MMC" Rice with a runtime of 59m59s. The summary of topics is as follows:
- 01m24s | Forum Talk
Take-Two Interactive will be meeting, but 2K Games will not be showing, at this year's E3 while one illuminates possible meaning behind the cover art for Civilization V: Brave New World (06m14s) while some decry the manner, and subsequent treatment, through which it was revealed (10m02s); elsewhere, arguing submarine use against CivV's Artificial Intelligence (AI) is exploitative (14m00s), counting down the release to BNW (17m07s), new BNW interview revealing new information (19m41s), apparent lack of Trading Posts meaning a return to Cottage improvements from CivIV speculation (28m41s), and looking beyond Brave New World for future Civ releases (33m20s).
- 38m24s | Research Lab
Making an effort to recall a removed civilization to life in a game of Civilization have meaning and substance (recorded for Episode 164).
- 48m04s | Miscellaneous
What is with all CivV workers being left-handed (recorded for Episode 166), while looking to declare "Mr. Beard" from among the game's civilization leaders.
- Intro/Outro | Miscellaneous
Learning from a mistake when it comes to re-reporting, clicking fallout and how not to exit gracefully.
Recording live before a listening audience every other Saturday, PolyCast is a bi-weekly audio production in an ongoing effort to give the Civ community an interactive voice on game strategy; listeners are encouraged to follow the show on Twitter, and check out the YouTube channel for caption capability. With the impending shutdown of Civilization: World, use the opportunity to reflect in your words, in your voice, on the SCivCast (SC) podcast. The show's eighth episode, to be its last for the foreseeable future, is to feature farewells and reflections from a number of past panelists. At the same time, the CivWorld community is invited to contribute directly by verbally communicating thoughts and views of their own. Good Day Ladies and Gentlemen,
With the latest round of information releases we have been able to gain a good insight into two more of the Civilizations that will be available in the Brave New World Expansion.
and without further ado
Portugal
Portugal is led by the first non-bearded leader of the expansion, Maria I who happens to be the Great-Grandmother of Brazil's Perdro II and a decedent of Isabella I of Spain. Portugal is a Civilization that will do well ruling the sea trade lanes of Brave New World. In Brave New World you get bonus gold if cities connected with an International Trade Route each have different resources, Portugal gets double that bonus with their Unique Ability 'Mare Clausum'. Their sea trade prowess is also enhanced by their unique Unite the 'Nau', not only is the Nau a more advanced Caravel, it also has a once off ability to sell exotic goods at a foreign port for some serious gold and XP. Finally, Portugal gets the ability to build a 'Feitoria', not in their own territory, but within the boarders of a City State, this allows them to have a copy of any Luxury resource that City State produces.
Zulu
You asked for him and you asked for him and you asked for him, well Shaka is back, just don't come crying to us when he nukes you back to the stone age. It should come to no surprise that the Zulus are heavily combat focused, in fact the Zulu unique ability gives them gives them a reduced maintenance coast for melee units and 25% bonus to XP gained through battle. As well as being able to field cheaper armies, Shaka also gets to build the Ikanda, a replacement for the barracks, which gives units free perks against gunpowder units and possible other bonuses. All of these combined makes their unique unit the 'Impi' a Ranged/Melee hybrid replacement of the Pikemen all the more terrifying for those who have the misfortune to be living next door.
Box Art
Finally over on Facebook 2kGames has released the box art for Brave New World, no word yet on whether the placement of the logos (ERSB=Autocracy, Firaxis=Freedom & 2kGames= Order) was intentional or just an amusing happenstance. For more info visit the Brave New World Forum.
