Game of the Month 138: October 2012


This scenario is designed by Pr. Garfield to introduce two aspects of Civ 2 that are not usually seen by experienced players: a fight for survival and modern naval warfare. Spoiler tags are used in this post for organizational purposes, not because they spoil the game.

I'm sorry if this GOTM has a lot of information, but I think most of it is necessary given the unusual nature of this game. If anything is unclear or if you think it should be changed, please say so.

Game Settings:
Civilization: Egyptians
Map: Revealed as part of the scenario
Difficulty: Deity
Length: 240 turns (Jan 1871 - Dec 1890)
Victory: Special Scoring System
Special Rules: See GOTM 138 thread

Players should submit saves on the turn they qualify for the Green Star, a Medal, and the Blue Star. They should also submit a saved game from 1881 (half way through the game) and their final save. Additionally, a saved game should be included if the Romans gain 40 objectives for a marginal victory.

A player may end this GOTM on any turn and submit for ranking based on the objectives he actually completed. Players who do not meet any victory conditions (Green Star, Medal, Blue Star, Red Star) are ranked as players defeated the turn after their submission.

Pentagon revisited

For the Sep 2012 edition of GOTM we replay the June game: GOTM 135 with the condition of having to play OCC removed. Everything else is as before. You may use any strategy to win (OCC included).

Clarification on "Everything else is as before"
In GOTM 135 we made a special rule to allow replays from the start. I should have made it clear whether that is the special rule here or not but failed to do so originally. The special rule is now that you can reload till you get a desirable outcome for the one and only hut in the pentagon. No other reloading/restart is allowed. More specifically you may not restart to change battle outcomes or the hut outcomes of any other hut.

Pentagon

This 100x100 round world consists of a southern continent and a northern continent hugging the poles and spanning around the world. The southern continent is very green and vacant. Northern continent has some dry spots and is home to Mongols. There is another small continent shaped like a pentagon right in the middle. The human player, playing the orange civ, is right in the middle of this continent. The remaining 5 rivals are on the 5 corners of the pentagon.

The pentagon is large enough so that no two capital cities share a tile yet small enough that each capital's border touches that of some other capital.

The challenge here is to win before Mongols do.

We are going to play on this map twice. This first round, will be OCC. Next round, this Fall, will be a regular game. This is going to be a rather unusual OCC due to the proximity of so many rivals and the fact that late game multilateral warfare is all but inevitable.
