Mods of the Week - July 2014
By Camikaze at 2014-08-06 03:00
Each week we feature a mod made by one of our members on our Facebook page. You can submit your mod for consideration in the Creation & Customization forums for Civ5, Civ4, Civ3 or Civ2. July saw 4 Mods of the Week, from XV to XVIII.

Mod of the Week XV - Cities of Marble for Civ5 BNW, by Machiavelli24.
Spoiler:
There are many cities of brick but can you build a city of marble? With new and modified National Wonders you'll be able to specialize your cities like never before, raising the small and obscure city to glory and greatness!

Key Mechanical Differences:
-Multiple new National Wonders.
-Significant changes to existing National Wonders.

Highlights:
-Heroic Epic: now gives a free Great General upon construction -- useful if you are planning to swiftly conquer a vulnerable neighbor or if you need to make a heroic defense against an invading horde!
-Grand Bathhouse: A new National Wonder for Granaries that provides a free Aqueduct and makes newly founded cities start with an extra population. For those going wide or tall.
-National College: instead of giving a large science boost the National College now gives you scientist slots and a single free tech upon completion. Do you complete the National College early to get a critical technology? Or do you delay building the National College in order to grab an expensive technology for free?
-Circus Maximus: now provides additional happiness from every Circus and Colosseum in your empire, providing a critical boost for expansionist empires.
-Grand Waystation: a new National Wonder for Caravansaries. It provides an additional trade route and extra copies of luxury goods, supporting all kinds of trade.
-Great Temple: now gives faith for every religion that has at least one follower in the city it is built. Trade routes from the city will spread your religion faster and the foreign religion the trade route brings back will improve your faith generation!
-Diplomatic Mission: a new National Wonder for Constables that provides an additional spy and delegate. By hook or by crook you will achieve your agenda.
-National Intelligence Agency: on top of improving spies it now provides happiness for every Courthouse and Police Station, ensuring a player who seeks to conquer the world won't have anything to fear from their new subjects.

Mod of the Week XVI: The Sioux, by Tomatekh, for Civ 5 BNW.
Spoiler:
The Sioux are a Native American people in North America, traditionally belonging to the Great Sioux Nation or "Seven Council Fires". They can be subdivided into three major divisions based on dialect and culture: the Santee, the Yankton-Yanktonai, and the Lakota. As each of the Council Fires adapted to different Plains environments, their lifestyles changed and diverged from one another. Yet, they maintained their political, economic, and social ties through intermarriage, trade, religious ceremonies, communal hunting, and military alliances. They are perhaps best known today through the image of the Lakota hunting Buffalo across the Great Plains and as a symbol of native resitance to U.S. westward expansion. The Sioux first came into contact with Europeans during the 17th century, which would begin a series of conflicts as European settlers continued to push west onto Sioux lands. After three major wars and numerous other skirmishes, the battle of Wounded Knee in December 1890 marked the end of Sioux resistance as hundreds of Sioux men, women, and children were massacred by U.S. troops. Today, the majority of the Sioux live at the 2,782 square mile Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

Leader: Sitting Bull

UA: Great Buffalo Hunt: Starting with your second City, settling near Plains Tiles will spawn a Buffalo Bonus Resource which will periodically roam throughout the map.* Buffalo provide a large base tile yield and may claim neutral territory.

UU: Strong Heart: Replaces Knight. Can receive defensive bonuses. +25% vs gunpowder units. The first Strong Heart trained will also act as a Great General, providing a combat bonus to nearby land units. If this unit is killed the bonus transfers to another random Strong Heart warrior.

UI: Tipi: Available at Trapping. +1 Food, +1 Culture. +1 Food after Horseback Riding. If built near a City near which Buffalo is also present, you have the option to move 1 Population from your largest City to the Tipi City. On City capture, all non-pillaged Tipi in the City Radius are removed. 1 Population per removed Tipi is redistributed to your remaining Cities.** Short build time. Does not remove Forests. Requires Flatland Plains tiles. May not be built adjacent to another Tipi or on Resource tiles.

Mod of the Week XVII - History Rewritten for Civ4, by Xyth.
Spoiler:
"History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it." - Winston Churchill

History Rewritten is an expansion and enhancement of BtS designed for both Mac and Windows, single and multiplayer. Play as one of 52 civilizations, each with two unique units, a unique building, a unique wonder, custom city and unit art. Strive for dominance against 154 animated leaders, each with a unique combination of traits and customized personality. Found cities with names dynamically chosen to consider leader and era. Discover natural wonders, savannah, wetlands, reefs, islands, and many new resources. Select improvements to best match your terrain and keep pollution manageable - cottage spam won't get you far in this mod! Advance through a completely rebuilt and more detailed techtree, use prophets to found 18 diverse religions, and compete against 14 overhauled real-world corporations. Specialize your cities to independently generate different great people (including great doctors). Choose from 36 civics carefully... lest dissent rise high in your cities and trigger a civil war!

The philosophy of History Rewritten is that new content and new mechanics are great, but only when they are designed and integrated well; carefully balanced, using quality art, and with a unique role to play. Many aspects of BTS (and its UI) have been rebalanced or redesigned to accommodate this, some quite extensively. The mod is actively developed; there have been 21 updates since release back in 2010, and more are planned. Coming soon: Tenets and Faith!

History Rewritten values historical accuracy, but equally strives for historical diversity and to avoid determinism. After all, you are not recreating history - you are rewriting it!

Mod of the Week XVIII - The Dene Peoples for Civ5, by Neirai and TPangolin.
Spoiler:
This mod adds the aboriginal people of Nothern America, the Dene, to the game, led by Thanadelthur - an Ex-Slave who forged peace between her people, the Cree and the Hudson's Bay Company. The Dene are a Musical people, with strong ties to Tundra, Faith and Music.

Music has always been very central to the Dene way of life. However, traditionally, the Dene only used one instrument: the drum. Drum circles with participants from all walks of Dene life were often formed, with the intent of channeling their respective spirit animals into the heart of the music.

The Sacred Drummer is the unique unit for the Dene, replacing the Great Prophet. Upon birth, it beckons the beginning of a sacred ritual commonly know as a Prophet Dance. The participants of the Prophet Dance danced with vigour, in order to hasten the renewal of the world and the subsequent return of the dead. This increases the Happiness of the empire alongside the rate at which Great People are born for all cities connected to the empire.

The Dene also have access to the Unique Yellowknife Encampment Improvement that progressively supplies Food, Faith, Iron and Musician Points for this unique Tundra-bound Civilization.
