1. What is this game ?

This game is somewhat different from Civilization - scenarios which You know.
We tried to make an independent war-adventure game based on the Civilization-II
battle program. And so You must know SOME MAIN RULES without which You cannot play.

2. Quests and a plot

First of all this game contains a series of quests. There are quests in each part of the scenario. All together they form the plot. Each quest directly depends on it's predecessor. If You did not fulfill the previous quest you should not (and are not able to) to begin the next. Sometimes You may be given several quests at a time. Strong recommendation: Do not change anything in «events» and «rules» files if You do it anyway use only the MPS «editor». Do not attempt it manually
from the «txt» files or the game may act unpredictably.

3. How do I know what I must do?.

Very simple. There are many characters (units) in the game who have special roles. These are Spartacus, his comrades
-in-arms such as Anomai, Artorix, Farnak and many others including the Roman warlords. They will talk with each other, give advice and You will see their words in text on the screen. Sometimes You will get letters from Your spies. All these are information and/or direct orders (quests) to You : where to move troops and which city to capture and how many turns You have to complete these missions. Always follow these commands or you will lose the "thread" of the scenario.

4. Spartacus and others.

Spartacus is represented in the game by a very strong foot unit. You may use him for any purpose but remember what he must not be killed. If You loose this unit, YOU LOSE THE GAME. This is the main rule. And so use him carefully.
Another special unit is Artorix, Spartacus’ spy, the single spy in Your army. He has all the spy abilities, can investigate Roman cities and strongholds, stab enemy units etc...
And it is also the single «immortal» unit. Being «trapped» by the Romans he will always reappear in Your camp because he too «smart» to be captured. But beware, after a difficult mission he may say that he is tired of espionage and wants to be a counselor at your headquarters. After that he disappears from the map.
Our recommendation is to try to avoid this. Although it will not ruin the plot, it will deprive You of your only spy and of a special new unit in Part-Y.

5. Turn limit

Each part and each quest (except Part-YII) is limited to a certain number of turns. You must complete ALL YOUR MISSIONS in the defined turn interval. You cannot begin a new mission until You have finished the previous quest.
If you ignore this, you ruin the game plot and may not get special new units and new events that are triggered upon completing a quest or reaching a goal. The duration of each part can be seen on the introduction screen, when each part is launched.
If You fight well and complete your quests before the end of a part, use the spare time to conquer more Roman cities. In total the main plot (Parts I-VI) takes about 200 turns to complete. Part VII (the last) is unlimited.

6. «Key» cities and «Impregnable» cities

There some «key» cities in the each part. They are the target cities for quests within that part. You will be told to capture them while you follow Your current quest orders.
On the other hand some cities cannot be captured in certain Parts. This often means that such a city is the key city for the next Part. We protected these from conquest with special tricks and they can be captured only with «CHEAT MODE» but

DO NOT DO IT. Follow Spartacus’ orders. If he say what You must not spent time on siege of Cunnae now but must go to Askulum first - do exactly as he ordered. Here is a list of cities which You must not attack:

Buksent - until part 2
Cunnae - until the fall of Askulum
Kanusium - until part 5
Tarent - until part 7

To tell you the truth we are quite sure that You will not have time or enough forces to capture these before the appointed time and we have made it almost impossible, but just in case, keep it in mind.

7. TECHNICAL RULE: VERY IMPORTANT !

How to launch the game?
When You unzip game files You will find 7 separate sub-folders
containing the files for parts I-VII and a "sound" folder.
First create a new folder in the Your Scenario section called, for example, «Spartacus».
First move the "sound" folder (With its content) into the "Spartacus" folder. Then open
the part I folder and copy all the files from it to this "Spartacus" scenario folder.
Now start Civ II, select "Start scenario" move to the "Spartacus" folder and select Spartac.scn...
You are now playing part I.
Follow the text instructions on the screen until You see the «NOW LOAD PART-II» message.
As soon as you can, activate CHEAT MODE and use the command «SAVE AS SCENARIO» from the cheat menu. Save the scenario under the same name "spartac.scn".
Then QUIT the game (A must for the parts where you are loading a new game.txt file).
Open the part II folder and copy all it's files into the Spartacus folder, overriding the
corresponding part I files. This loads a new series of events, a new starting screen, new game
settings, new unit graphics etc...
After this launch Civ II again, select "start scenario", select the "Spartacus" folder and "spartac.scn" scenario. You are now playing part II starting where the last part left off.
Repeat this sequence at the end of each part until you load part VII.

This may appear tedious but consider that each part is an entire Civ II game in itself so having
a few loading steps at the end of each part doesn't interfere with the gameplay.
Make sure you never copy any files into the 7 "part" folders as this would corrupt the game and
make it impossible to replay. Always copy from the part folders into the "Spartacus" folder.
Note that there are multiple rules, events, game and units files for the game and they can easily be mixed up if they are "moved" out of the parts folders as opposed to copied into the scenario folder.

At the start of the game You have only a handful of gladiators lead by Spartacus. With this force located at the military camp on Vesuveus mountain You must fight against powerful Roman Republic.
This game is one big battle quest which incorporates with numerous local quests . It is so long that You will need replace “events” file several times.

SOME HINTS ABOUT THE SCENARIO:

PART 1: “Uprising”
missions: capture Pompea, slay roman Pretor Tit Servilian, marching from Capya, destroy his kohorts. Plunder and burn nearest Roman villas, liberate local slaves and recruit them into
Your army
PART  2: “Battle under Vesuveus, marsh to Napolis”
missions: protect gladiators camp against combined forces of roman Pretor Klodius Glabur and Capua Prefect Mattius Libeon. Capture Libeon and kill Glabur. Then march to Napolis, capture an siege ammunition in the city, make contact with the spy of Asian Tsar Mitridat. Storm Capua with siege machines, liberate gladiators from prison.

When Spartacus has been completed   I sent it to test to my best friend and the PARTNER in the game-creation Captain Nemo. These letters, which I have got from the brave Captain, will give to Your the full information about this WAR, where You have a deal not only with weak AI intellect but with my own strong brain on the side of Romans. Captain took a Spartacus side (only this side available for human player in this game) and began the WAR

~~Chapter I : Captain arrives to the battlefield !

Hello Alex...I have just played Spartacus 3 times up to the point where it says to load part II . Overall I think this could be the best scenario ever! I like it very much, excellent graphics and great gameplay... Easy to play because there are few units, no need to move 100's of units to play. Also interesting to have goals set by the game.
First time I got trashed, lost Spartacus, gladiators, spy Artorix and all other units, no chance to win. Second and third game much better. Last game I accomplish all goals (At king level), captured all target cities including gate city of Benevent (very easy with siege tower protecting 10-15 archers). Very good game! I only lost piracy ship in large naval battle with Roman fleet (he first killed over 10 war triremes) and 2 of my gladiators. Congratulations! excellent game, this will be the best scenario for Civ II. I look forward to getting part II...

Chapter II : Captain is advancing,
but meets first roman regular troops

I tested phase II of the game... Still excellent! I won phase II
(In my opinion) did capture the gold, Benevent, Buksent and killed pretor Glabur...
I recaptured Capua and Pompei after Glabur's demise and was working on capturing Sardinia and the gate city past Benevent.

Artorix dissappeared and became "counselor" after stabbing many Roman units. I liked him better as a spy. I still have 3 gladiators, Anomai, the original spy, one merchant vessel, Pentera, one Ram, 2 Mede and Spartacus left. I would say I am doing good!

Chapter III :Terror in
Italy...-Played part III approx. 90%. . I am too good for the AI...The invasion of western Italy failed (Attack by Romans early in part III) I lost all my Gladiators pushing back the attack but my many archers then killed all the legions and the catapults "crashed" because they didn't capture the cities they attacked... I got the port city of Askulum too I only need to finish off my new adversary , pretor Varinius. I have about 100 archers by now... Building more archers in the old Roman cities... Still excellent game.

Chapter
IY : The battle against consular army
-
In part IV I am having some new challenges: First the Consul, Lentul Clodian and all his troops including his pretor and centurions showed up for the attack on Venuzia...The battle was good but again I overwhelmed the opponents with massive numbers, and just shot them to pieces in 2 turns but then the technology was given to the Romans to build Legionaries and with all those cities producing there are now legionaries everywhere.
Fortunately the rebels got the ability to build Spearmen and Manipuls also so I am trying to compesate. My campaign was going so good that by the time I got the letter from Gaius Gracchus telling me that he was locked in prison in Kanusium I had been holding the city for at least 20 turns...Somehow I must have overlooked him when I freed the prisoners...
Also Karali and Olbia on Sardinia and Eader in Greece capture by Tigran and his pirates...As you well know he was over there looking Mitridat's gold...

--Chapter IY: Army goes to South

It is excellent! I actually was sorry I didn't have part IV when I finished part III... I wanted to continue and see what's next! The game is really really good...I think anybody ould  Now I am getting smarter at this all the time so the last challenge
of part III was too easy. I found Varinius' camp, as expected in the woods near Askulum but this time I prepared for him, so no surprises like with Glabur...he-he. I placed 25 archers around the camp in the woods and on hills, then attacked the camp. As expected Varinius appeared with a lot of tough legionary units but all my archers had not moved during the turn yet so Varinius and all his cohorts were exterminated before they even could attack...------------------
Also all of southern Italy except Tarent and 2 other towns are in rebel hands.. One town on Sardinia is still holding out but I now have many archers there so it won't be long...
If Pompey doesn't hurry I will be greet him from my throne in the Senate...he-he-he.

Chapter Y:  Heavy loses, Anomai is died !
We had just finished off consul Lentul Clodian and his cohorts in Venusia valley when we left off at the beginning
of part V with the goal of freeing Gaius Gracchus in the prison of Kanusium. I emptied the garrison and then "talked" to the man on the cross which caused the appeareance of the Roman army and the capture of Kanusium. The fight after that was tough, more Roman troops than ever, and reinforced by Legionary units from nearby towns...The Romans starting to build tough units in part IV changes the aspect of the game...suddently there are Roman troops advancing against every city in the rebel empire and it is not possible to just leave 1 or 2 garrison units behind and move the main force towards the next Roman city.

The fight for Kanusium saw the appearance of our Roman ally Marcus Varr and eventually the demise of second consul Publicola but not without losing quite a few rebel troops...The Roman army appeared more spread out this time so I couldn't kill them all with my technique of spreading archers widely around the countryside to ambush any appearing Romans before they have a chance to fight and Roman reinforcements also came in during the battle . Kanusium was ultimately captured and Gaius Gracchus joined our forces.

On other fronts Tigran started building a conquering force in Greece. Attempts to invade Sicily and Corsica failed due to too many Roman legionaries walking around the countryside...even big landing forces were annihilated pretty quickly by massive numbers of Roman cavalry and legions...The whole lower part of the Italian "boot" is mine except Brundisium and Sipont (I fought my way past the towers and into Tarent which was supposed to be impregnable) All the cities in the "foot" of the boot were captured from the west side by my 3rd army. Anomai died in this part he is the first "main" character that I have lost.

Tigran with his sea brigands landed in Greece in order
to capture and plunder city Eader

Chapter VI: Siege of Brundisium : Mitridat is coming !

In this part I already hold Tarent so the capture of Brundisium appears and easy task...well it was not. Building a large enough force to take the city was almost impossible. Two attempts with not enough forces failed, with counterattacks from the city wiping out my siege forces. Also the valley between Venuzzia and Benevent was suddently crawling with legionary units preventing my reinforcements from the central valley and Northeast coastal cities to reach Tarent.

My Roman ally Sertorus suddently appeared in Sicily with what seemed a great force of Roman veteran renegades, elephants and siege machines...I thought this was my chance to gain a
foothold in Sicily...but he was immediately surrounded by Roman legionary units and cavalry and though his Veteran legions were stronger they were killed one by one by sheer numbers. Soon I could see that it was hopeless so I tried to evacuate him and his last men but on the way down to the War Pentera he was finally overcome and killed.

But then I finally captured Brundisium and Mitridat's fleet showed up, landed his army and left (Cheap! He should have left his ships behind) I also got the quest for the pirate's gold but so late that my ship didn't even come close to finding it before the end of part VI so I gained the  enemity of the "brotherhood" (In part VII) without even robbing their gold!!.

Other events this time: Krix died defending Ravenna where battles raged continuously during part VI. Marcus Varr and a group of rebels also succombed after landing on Sicily to avenge his boss (Sertorus) (Sicily is tough!!) Sipont is still holding out...completely surrounded, deep inside the "Rebel empire" with no reinforcements from the outside . There is no place to hide from counterattacks and my entire "stack" of archers and spearmen gets wiped out each time! Worse, there is not even any good defensive terrain around the city, just plains.

On the other fronts, no great conquest except Capua (Recaptured after loss in part III) and Bovian. An expeditionary force on Corsica is still alive and moving in on the only city there, Alalia.
Although warned by my new spy Evtebida there were no sign of Pompey the Great or Lucullus yet.

ChapterVII: Pompey is routed, where is Lucullus's army?

Started out great! Suddently I have the ability to build cavalry and with the new counselor and builder Artaban I can build the roads that were missing between my cities. But also almost immediately there are swarms of tough Pompean legions advancing on my cities. Fortunately Ravenna is one of their main objectives and I have a huge force inside the city wall: 15 spearmen and 22 archers as well as some manipuls and armed peasants. In the attack I eliminate 30 or more Pompean units and finally Pompey the Great who wounded "retires" to Rome. I also outsmarted some of the attackers by bribing their best units (turtles) with my new spys before crushing the rest of the group. The rebels have turtles! I bet the Romans (Alex...) didn't expect that! You shouldn't have made those units so strong!!

Artaban "teaches" the rebels shipbuilding so now there is hope for invading Sicily. Penteras are built and a very large force is formed...The last of the Pompean veterans must have fallen against Capua and Pompei as after that I start only seeing the more normal Roman units, Hastats and Legionaries. With the new ships Corsica is conquered and finally the rebels capture the first town on Sicily, Messina. This was the 5th attempt, a very tough assignment...Now with a base and foothold the rebels bring in reinforcements and seize Tavromenius, Catania and Enna in a short time. Tigran also seizes Salonae in Greece... But the war isn't over... Where is Lucullus?
Part YII: Before the last battle

So, well into part VII, I am turning to Rome. Spies sneak up the Western coast and determine the lay of the land: There are two well defended and fortified towns on the road, Norba and Perneste, then a pair of forts before Rome. Artaban has been busy connecting all the cities together with roads so the whole Rebel empire can build and send troops to my staging cities: Capua for the attack on Rome and Ravenna for a campaign against Northern Roman cities. To succeed Spartacus must use massive armies. It is not enough to just damage a bunch of city defenders and see them back to full strength by the next turn! They must die and the city must fall in one assault.
So the forces of archers, horsemen and spearmen are built up for 10-15 turns. In the meantime Artaban delivers more knowledge and rams and siege towers can now be built. The siege towers especially give great protection for the attacking force. Still no sign of Lucullus...Alex must have messed up in his events file?

Then the siege started. In the North Atrium and Placentia fall but not without me losing a large group of archers to a counterattack: I moved 2 siege towers up to the city then placed 15 archers in the towers, waiting for next turn to rain destruction on the defenders. (Atrium does not have any adjacent fortifications to hide in) There must have been a ram or turtle inside the city because one blow takes out the siege tower and with it my whole force...Ouch!

New technique: Stop one terrain square short of the city (Out of reach) Then move and fire in the next turn, however this causes the archers to attack at 2/3 strength...It takes longer to win and causes more casualties to the rebel side. Nevertheless the cities fall. Norba was tough, must have been 20 defenders or more in there!! At least here I can use abandoned Roman fortifications as my attack base and this prevents the loss of entire armies in one blow. Norba is taken, then Perneste. In the North, Akvilum...
But then out of nowhere a bunch of ships pull in near Tarent, Brundisium and near the Gladiator camp and unload a huge army of Roman veterans, horsemen, turtles and more...This must be the long awaited Lucullus! And they attack without hesitation, pillage my roads, capture the gladiator camp, as well as Sibaris and Crotone left weakly defended as I was sending my forces towards Rome.

Epilogue: The fall of Rome

The capture of Rome must wait, march orders are reversed and the troops marching on Rome and Ravenna are sent back to Tarent and Regium...A tough fight that cost the rebels dearly. Fortunately, Brundisium holds out but I lose my two last battle elephants, Farnak, my ally since part I, and all gladiators except 1. From Tarent and Regium forces converge and trap Lucellus in the southern valley. He is finally killed (Actually he escapes to Syracuse, but the very next turn my large siege forces on Sicily capture that city which finishes him off).

The Gladiator camp holds out a couple more turns until I can get 15 units assembled against it. So there we are at the gates of Rome...The attack on Rome is amazing! A huge force attacks, headed by archers and horsemen. The defenders are hit and weakened, and weakened...Pompey The Great is killed on the walls...The defending units are dying, but so are my attackers, Mettius is knocked out and runs off with the city treasury...I have to use my spearmen to attack (Bad odds) because all the archers and horsemen are dead but I can feel that the defenders are on their last leg: they are sending out garrison units with red status bars to be killed.

Finally the last defender is killed and the Roman "eagle" dissappears from the city wall...but I do not have a single unit left within reach that can walk in and take the city! So close. By the next turn there are new Hastats and Legionaries from nearby towns inside the city walls and my surviving attackers are so weak they must return to Perneste. It takes another 10 turns to build up again, this time speedbuilding 6 rams to help clear out the garrison! But ROME finally is mine, the senate is disbanded! Long live Spartacus!
