This FAQ is created to help players start a multiplayer game using Civilization II Gold or Test of Time. If you don't have Civ2 Gold or ToT, you can download a third-party patch in our Downloads Collection that allows you to play Civ2 multiplayer. I haven't tried this patch so I am not sure how good it is. But if you seriously want to play Civ2 multiplayer, you should get either the Gold version or Test of Time.

Playing Civ4 online can be a very different experience than playing offline, and different strategy and tactics are often required.

Multiplayer is a completely different world from single player, and while playing MP may improve your SP, the inverse is only true to a certain extent. Humans and the AI act completely differently, and it's wise to be aware of the many differences this causes before joining a game.
Wars: understanding when fighting will and should occur
Humans will rarely leave a war unless their objective has been reached. If you're invaded by a foe with rifles against maces, they're not going to accept a few gold for peace. Conversely, if a human suddenly offers you peace, they most likely have a very pressing reason to do so. If you've been on the defensive and just got your first cossack, it's better to re-conquer all of your old cities than let your opponent fortify them!

About 2 months ago, after winning a tough setup monarch game with ease (don't get me wrong, it took plenty of attempts to do that), I decided to try my hand playing online. In those 60 odd days, I have discovered three things about online Civ 4:
A) Gamespy is a steaming pile of monkey plop (but that's not what we're discussing here thank God! )
B) I play Civ much better than the average online player (although I am by no means the best of the best or anything, I have my awful games as well as my good ones)
C) A lot of players try using strategies that work offline but fail miserably against aggressive, thinking humans.
