Part III: The Democratic Republic and Modernization

1660 AD In the ensuing confusion of revolution in Rome, Marcus Portius Cato (the Elder) seizes power and establishes a Fundamentalist government; a generation of Romans acquiesce, and Cato sets income taxes at 80% so as to generate 1000 in gold every ten years. Embassies report that the Carthaginians and Zulus have signed a secret alliance against Rome.
1670 AD
Zulus launch sneak attack, sinking the Roman Frigate Adinfinitum. Cato declares war on the Zulus. An Aztec diplomat penetrates the defenses of Calixtlahuaca to steal the art engineering. Cato declares war on the Aztecs, proclaiming “censeo Aztecum esse delendam.” The city of Curia is founded.
1680 AD Roman diplomats incite revolts in Tlaxcala and Tlatelco; in the ensuing civil wars, their citizens declare their allegiance to Rome.
1690 AD Roman diplomats incite a revolts in Teotihaucan and Texcoco; in the ensuing civil wars, their citizens declare their allegiance to Rome.
1700 AD Roman forces, under the command of Consular General Claudius Marcellus, advance on Tenochtitlan. A loyalist Legion from Texcoco falls before the walls of Tenochtitlan while covering the advance of the Calixtlahuaca cannon regiments.
1710 AD
Roman cannons breach the walls of Tenochtitlan, which is then stormed by the forces of Rome, who capture the Great Wall. Fall of the Aztec Civilization. Despite the successful war against the Aztecs, Cato’s stringent tax policies lead the citizens of Rome to begin a revolution and demand a new government. The city of Alba Fuecens is founded. The Chinese and Zulus cancel their alliance and declare war on one another.
1720 AD The Democracatic Republic of Rome is established, with Claudius Marcellus as its first President.
1730 AD The cities of Aztec Civilization are granted status as citizens of Rome; Tenochtitlan, Teotihuacan, and Tlaxcala express their gratitude by celebrating “We Love the President’s Day.” Rome establishes two trade routes with the Chinese city of Canton, the first of its international trade routes.
1740 AD Barbarian Frigate sunk in a naval battle off of Alba Fuecens.

With enthusiastic support from President Gaius Marius, the Roman army establishes a military academy, where the new theories of Aelianus Tacticus on military Leadership are taught. The cities of Cannae, Capua, and Cales are founded.
1762 AD Zulus and Mongols form the “Kashgar Pact” to contain Roman aggression. The city of Hadria is founded.
1764 AD Scientists at Galileus’s College formulate the fundamental laws of Electricity. Tarentum builds Senaca’s Theatre.
1768 AD Under the influence of Aelianus Tacticus, President Marius proclaims that Conscription is fundamental necessity for the defense of demoncracy.

1776 AD
Scientists at the Leonardus Institute apply the principles of electricity to advance the process of Refrigeration. As his final major act as President, Gaius Marius raises the luxury tax rate to 50% to promote growth, and the income tax rate to 50% so as to generate 1800 in gold every other year. Barbarian raiding party lands near Corfinium.
1778 AD “We Love the President Day” celebrated throughout Roman civilization. Rome builds first Supermarket. Roman engineers commence work on railways within the Chinese civilization.
1782 AD Aelianus Tacticus writes his last great work, de Militaribus Amphibious, which establishes the fundamental doctrines of Amphibious Warfare. Chinese and Zulus make peace and sign the “Chengdu Pact” to contain Roman aggression. The alliance system against Rome is complete. Rome builds first Stock Exchange and commences work on a magnicent Tower.
1788 AD Roman census determines that the population of Roman civilization has reached 50,000,000.
1790 AD
Zulus commence work on a great Tower. Native unrest near Paestum results in the loss of a battalion of civilian engineers.
1794 AD
Surprise attack by Barbarian raiding party on the city Treveri; two Cavalry regiments are defeated, and the Barbarians storm into Treveri. An battalion of civil engineers also fall in the Barbarian attack. The Roman Destroyer Delirium survives a sneak attack by the Zulus. Rome declares war on the Zulu civilization over this outrage.
1796 AD
A Roman diplomat is withdrawn from duty in Augustodorum, and incites the citizens of Treveri rebel; in the ensuing civil war, the citizens overthrow their Barbarian overlords. Native unrest near Pompeii.
1800 AD

Roman emissary to Bortei of the Mongols offers 1050 in gold if the Mongols declare war on the Zulus; Bortei accepts this offer, cancels her alliance with the Zulus, and goes to war. The cities of Lucri and Rhegium are founded. (See Map.)

1806 AD
President Julius Caeser (the elder) announces the commencement of an ambitious program of modernization. Science tax raised to 80%. The Mongols undertake a Voyage of scientific discovery. Native unrest near Curia. The city of Caralis is founded.
1808 AD Roman Industrialization. The Zulus undertake a Voyage of scientific discovery.
1810 AD
Economists at Galileus’s College advance the economic theory of the Corporation. Zulu Ironclad sinks the Roman destroyer Delirium off the coast of Mpondo. Peasant revolt near Pompeii.
1812 AD Scientists at the Leonardus Institute discover Electronics. Ravenna commences work on great Dam to power Roman industry. Carthage undertakes a Voyage of scientific discovery.

Scientists at Galileus’s College discover the process of Combustion. Carthaginian invasion defeated at Fregellae. First factories are built at Veii, Cumae, Hispalis, Virconium, Byzantium, and Pisae. Barbarian raiding party thwarted near Hippo Regius.
1818 AD
At an Exposition celebrating the 10th annivesary of industrialization, Engineers from the Leonardus Institute introduce the Automobile. The Chinese industrialize and commence a campaign for Women’s Suffrage. Peasant revolt near Pompeii.
1820 AD Engineers at the Leonardus Institute invent Machine Tools. Rome builds the first Superhighways.
1822 AD Working together, Economists at Galileus’s College and Scientists at the Leonardus Institute establish the procedures of Mass Production. The Zulus industrialize.
1824 AD Scientists at the Leonardus Institute develop Minaturization. Zulus begin a campaign for Women’s Suffrage. Veii, Cumae, Hispalis, Virconium, Byzantium, and Pisae build the first Mass Transits; Augustadorum and Trapezus build the first Port Facilities. The city of Virunum is founded.
1826 AD Scientists at Leonardus Institute invent Computers. Rome commences work on SETI. Carthage industrializes.
1828 AD
Military Theoretician’s at the Marius Academy of Warfare advance the doctrine of Mobile Warfare. Rome builds SETI. Rome commences campaign for Women’s Suffrage. The first battleships are launched from Augustadorum and Trapezus. Veii builds the first Offshore Platform. Ravenna and Tarentum build the first barracks for the New Roman Army. Barbarian raiding party lands near Tyrus, inflicting defeat upon one Cavalry regiment and two battalions of civil Engineers.

1834 AD Theoretician’s at the Marius Academy of Warfare formulate the doctrines of Guerilla Warfare; Economists and Scientists at Galileus’s College advocate the practice of Recycling. Widespread protests against modernity lead to the rise of fundamentalists and the downfall of the Roman government of President Julius Caeser.
