The Value Foundation: “Game Changers: Antiquity and Video Games”

By | June 4, 2023

The Value Foundation, a foundation dealing with history, video games, and education, has released a video where they discuss how various games have revolutionized game history. They talk about the concept of civilization, and how it appears in video games. Obviously they discuss our very favourite game, among others (e.g. Assassin’s Creed or Minecraft). They discuss that the concept itself is very unclear to scientists, but that Sid Meier planted down his own definition, which is often rather progressive. They further talk about how the game is, while educational, is in many ways also abstract, e.g. that you play an eternal leader, but never have a look at the history of average people. At the end, they note that Civ is revolutionary in a sense that it has spread the interest for history to many people, defined “Civilization” and let to many new games which picked up concepts from Civ.

Oh, and they’re also waiting for Civ7.

Layoffs at Firaxis

By | May 31, 2023

The current struggle in the techology sector also does not spare the gaming industry. Today it got public that Firaxis is laying off 30 of their developers. It is in general suspected that the poor sales of Midnight Suns are to blame, despite the game being a success among critics. We do not know right now which of the teams is most affected by the layoffs, so we also don’t know if the future development of Civilization 7 will be affected by this. For background please read this article, and come over here to discuss with us.
